OCCIDENTAL
America is such a melting pot of cultures and cuisines that it’s sometimes difficult to draw the line between the familiar and foreign. This month, I explore some of our city’s diverse cultural offerings from around the Occidental world­—Europe, Africa and the “New World.” Next month, I’ll focus on the Oriental continent of Asia. Italian Incredibles: With the exception of Chinese food, Italian cuisine probably has been more Americanized than any other foreign fare. In fact, some of what we consider Italian was created everywhere but in Italy. Take, for example, the caesar salad. Its birthplace was actually Tijuana, Mexico, circa 1920. I’m not kidding. Look it up.
